Insurance, Cost and Accreditations: Things to Consider When Employing a Tradesman

02-09-2016

With adverts in all local publications and posts in geographic Facebook groups, finding a tradesman isn't hard, but how can you ensure you're finding the best person for the job? There are a number of things you should consider when employing a tradesperson - here are just a few:

How Much Will it Cost?

Before enlisting the services of any tradesman it is important to do your research and to ensure you can afford to pay the average cost of the work to be done.

If so, then arrange multiple quotes for the job from different trade firms. This will not only help you to get the best deal possible, but make sure you get to meet the person who will be carrying out the job. As, after all, the best person on paper isn't necessarily the person who should get the job.

Is the Tradesman Accredited?

From a TrustMark accreditation to being listed on the UK Small Business Directory, make sure to do your research and keep an eye out for recognisable accreditation or trade logos. In order to gain these, the tradesperson will likely have had to prove their quality of work, skills and/or qualifications, meaning they're more likely to do a high-quality job at an affordable price.

What is Their Reputation Like?

Reading client testimonials and reviews, plus asking friends and family for their opinion, is a great way of gaging a tradesperson's reputation - whether this be for great work or the opposite. For larger jobs, it may also benefit to ask to see examples of their previously completed work, and, if possible, speak to the person the job was done for.

Every tradesperson believes they're the person for the job, and these honest opinions from unbiased past clients are a simple way of finding out if this really is the case.

Are They Insured?

A tradesperson's insurance is often not considered when they're contacted about a job, however it should be. If materials get stolen or damaged, the tradesman gets injured and is unable to work or the project is set back through an act of nature, the correct liability insurance will be able to provide compensation, without costing the business owner a small fortune.

Before employing the services of any tradesperson, ask about their business insurance and what that cover means for you should the worst happen. If you'd like to learn more about business liability insurance, read up on this topic here.
