30.4million Working Days Are Lost Each Year

The Health and Safety Executive has released these key health and safety statistics for 2015/2016 in Great Britain:

• There were 1.3million working people suffering from a work-related illness.
• 2,515 mesothelioma deaths occurred as a result of past asbestos exposure.
• 144 workers were killed while at work.
• 72,702 other employee injuries were reported under RIDDOR, whereas the Labour Force Survey revealed there were 621,000 injuries in the workplace.
• 30.4million working days were lost due to work-related illness and workplace injury.
• £14.1billion was the estimated cost of these injuries and ill health caused by working conditions.

The report delves in deeper and reveals that:

• 500,000 workers are suffering from new or longstanding work-related musculoskeletal disorders.
• 500,000 workers are suffering from new or longstanding work-related stress, depression or anxiety.
• In 2014/2015, the annual cost of new cases of work-related illness cost £9.3billion (excluding long latency illness such as cancer). A further £4.8billion was incurred due to workplace injury during the same period.
• Significantly higher injury rates are found with industries such as agriculture, forestry and fishing, construction, accommodation and food services.
• Ill health rates are statistically significantly higher than the rate for all industries in human health and social work activities, agriculture, forestry and fishing, public administration and defence.
