Over the last week, the UK has been battered by rain, winds and even mini-tornados in parts, which has resulted in nationwide destruction and floods. There has been many a trampoline blown over fences, cars submerged in water and leaking roofs. So, how can you protect your business to minimise the risk to your livelihood?
The Effects of Angus
The south coast and Wales has taken the brunt of the storm, with gale-force winds reaching a whopping 106mph in Margate and 80mph in Kent. Rainfall has also been extremely high. In one night Exeter received more than half of its expected monthly rainfall and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service received 133 flood-related calls within six hours on Sunday 20th November.
Weather warnings have now been put in place for much of Northern England and the West Midlands, with more than two inches of rain forecast in areas.
So, with plenty of bad wind and rain predicted for the coming days, what preventative measures can you put in place?
Create a Barrier
Whether you use good old fashioned sand bags, modular flood barriers or hydrasacks, it's important to create a barrier between your business premises and any flood water. All of these products will act as your first line of defence and keep water at bay for some time.
So, park all vehicles inside, if possible, and surround all openings of any kind with a layer of protection in order to keep your chances of staying dry high.
Seal All Openings
If your premises are in a flood zone, then flood gates or stanchions may also be a good idea. These can quickly and easily be installed to doors and windows to keep water out of your building.
Raise Your Assets
A completely free solution is to move all valuable assets, like stock or machinery, away from windows or doors and above ground level. This way, if your premises do spring a leak, items should not get ruined by the water.
Cover the Damage Costs with the Correct Insurance
Having your business premises or company vehicles flooded can have devastating results. Whether you have an office or a shop, whether you're a courier company or a plumbing SME, a flood could result in business interruption, damage to stock and a loss of profits as a result. Plus, there is the expense to repair any damage the water and debris may have caused, and disgruntled staff who will have suffered a loss in earnings.
However, if you have the correct insurance, all of these costs will be covered. To learn more about the many types of business insurance click here or give us a call on 0800 470 4648 to talk to one of our trained advisors about creating a customised policy that works for you.
