Charging point legislation creates buzz around electric vehicles

05-01-2011

New legislation to be brought in is set to increase the sales of electric vehicles such as the Renault Kangoo Z.E. and the Ford Transit Connect Electric. In a move which will delight electric vehicle manufacturers, the new legislation will make the installation of charging points a far simpler process.

Previously, for any charging points to be installed planning permission was required, however, this ‘bureaucratic barrier’ has now been removed. It is anticipated such a move will encourage thousands more points to be built around the country.

Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, explained that: “The Government will relax the need for planning permission. We know people want to buy into eco-friendly vehicles, but they need their politicians to catch up and bring in the infrastructure which makes it a feasible option”.

With the recent economic slump the environment has taken a backseat in the concerns of many, with financial issues demanding their full attention. However, 2011 has been hailed as ‘the year of the electric vehicle’, with the electric van market expected to be one of the strongest performing. This news will be well received by van manufacturers with both the Ford Transit Connect Electric and Renault Kangoo Z.E. eager to cut themselves a generous slice of the pie.
