We are all aware how much driving conditions can deteriorate over the winter months. Dark and wet days make it harder to see other cars on the road as well as greatly increasing braking distances; the cold can leave road surfaces icy, and if last year was anything to go by, covered in snow. There is also extra traffic on the road as the majority of Brits will travel to sunnier climes during the summer months, returning to work for the long haul through the winter.
Well official statistics from the Accident Exchange, a company which deals with the aftermath of an accident, has brought us some interesting although not completely surprising figures.
The survey concentrates on the days of the week when collisions most frequently occur, as well as the month of the year and time of day.
Day of the week and the percentage of accidents recorded:
Monday | 14.8 % |
Tuesday | 15.7 % |
Wednesday | 16.1 % |
Thursday | 15.5 % |
Friday | 17.9 % |
Saturday | 11.2 % |
Sunday | 8.8 % |
Unfortunately the limitations of this survey are that it in no way attempts to understand why most accidents occur on a Friday. Conjecture would lead to conclusions such as: more cars on the roads, more of a rush to get home, people turning off mentally and thinking about enjoying their weekend. Common sense would probably tell us that it is a little bit of all three.
The month when accidents are most prevalent:
January | 8.3 % |
February | 7.5 % |
March | 8.4 % |
April | 7.9 % |
May | 8.5 % |
June | 8.7 % |
July | 8.5 % |
August | 7.3 % |
September | 8.3 % |
October | 8.5 % |
November | 9.2 % |
December | 8.9 % |
The time of day accidents occur:
12-1am | 0.35 % |
1-2 am | 0.32% |
2-3 am | 0.24% |
3-4 am | 0.18% |
4-5 am | 0.17% |
5-6 am | 0.24% |
6-7 am | 0.84% |
7-8 am | 3.45 % |
8-9 am | 7.74 % |
9-10 am | 6.02 % |
10-11 am | 6.22 % |
11-12 Noon | 6.86 % |
12 Noon-1pm | 8.79 % |
1-2 pm | 7.62 % |
2-3 pm | 7.60 % |
3-4 pm | 8.48% |
4-5 pm | 8.29% |
5-6 pm | 8.84% |
6-7 pm | 6.61% |
7-8 pm | 4.26% |
8-9 pm | 2.80% |
9-10 pm | 1.81% |
10-11 pm | 1.33 % |
11-12 Midnight | 0.91 % |
So statistically speaking, you are most likely to have a collision on a Friday, in November, at 5-6pm. Not ground breaking news we know, but if more drivers take extra care during these times then we can make the roads of Britain a safer place. And safer roads make for cheap van insurance, so visit Van Compare and we will compare the prices for you.
